Avast Anti-Virus has worked for me. Apparently AVG is good too.
trendmicro has a free system scan/cleanse program on their website... I think it's called "Housecall" or something like that.
spybot is free, I have used it for 3 years with no problems.

beware when using "free" virus scams, er, scans. many give you false detections and then tell you they can remove them if you purchase their program!
go on google and look up free online virus scan
