I use AVG Anti Spyware (from the same company). Just go to their website and download it, it will say free trial period. After the trial period, it will still work fine. You can download the new definitions every day, the only difference is you have to do MANUAL scans of your PC instead of automatic scans or updates. But that's no big deal, just open the program from the task bar as often as you need to and update the software and do a total system scan. It has worked well for me and keeps the computer clean from adware, Malware, tracking cookies, etc.
I would second the above answer about Ad-Aware and Spybot Search %26 Destroy. They are probably the best ones around, and they both are free or have free versions.

You could also make use of AVG anti-spyware. There used to be a product called Ewido which is now part of the AVG suite of products. They do however have a free online scan:

I use Spybot Search and Destroy,CCleaner, and Ad-Aware 2007. All are free and do an excellent job at keeping my computer free of anything and everything.

As an added bonus, CCleaner also is a good registry cleaner
