What's up with this!?

Why does my clock on my computer decide to change to an hour behind the regular time?? It happened a few times in the last couple months, but what's the deal? I keep my system spyware and virus free at all times. I have Ad-Aware, Spywareblaster, Spybot, and a really good antivirus/firewall. I'm always updating everything, so what could be causing my clock to change?? There aren't any other weird things going on. like with my homepage or anything being affected. So, what could it be?

One thing that you should keep in mind is that the more security programs you have installed in your machine the more problems of interference, among the security programs, you should expect. I'm not saying that your problem is caused by that but I would not be surprised at all.

My view, when it comes to security matters, is get a good program to cover all bases and forget about loading your system with all kinds of small little and free security programs.

I don't really like to tell people what programs to buy or not to buy but I have been using Norton for years and I never had any problems with it. Go to Norton site and look into their Internet security 2006 or 2007.

Sounds like you have the wrong timezone set in your PC. Do you follow daylight savings time? If you are in a place where they do not then you need to make sure your timezone selection reflects that.

If you formatted the USB drive, then that would have removed the virus as all data is removed. The drive must have been inserted into another infected Windows machine, and hence reinfected.

As my free Norton trial that I got with my laptop expires tomorrow, I have a few questions for new stuff. Sadly, I cannot afford to re-up with Norton, so I downloaded a few free items, after of course carefully reading customer reviews and so on. Questions are as follows:

1-- I have antivirus, firewall, and pop-up block. What else do I NEED or do you recommend?

2-- How often should I run spyware removal?

Did you disconnect from the internet and reboot in safe mode when you ran your anti-spyware? If not, do it. Some trojans hide out in areas of the system that are protected when the computer is in normal mode.

Once all of your scans are done and you've gotten rid of the infections found, reboot in normal mode and connect to the internet. Then see if you get the same message when you run IE.

Run a test after you install it, then it will send all the files to the Virus Vault.
PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

How to remove "security toolbar 7.1"?

My computer is infected with "Security Toolbar 7.1", and it is showing different symptoms:

Norton Internet Security on my new laptop?

Hello, I just got a new laptop and whenever I start my machine, I get a notification saying I should use Norton Internet Security. I haven't downloaded a free 90 day version or bought Norton yet but I still see "Norton Internet Security" in control panel -%26gt; add/remove programs. Does it mean I have it on my machine? I'm planning to use AVG antivirus but before I download it, I want to make sure I don't have another Antivirus (i.e., Norton) on my machine.

you need to go to control panel .. add remove programs and uninstall norton first and then restart your system ... and then install your new antivirus.

there is a norton anti virus protection software out there or there is a AVG Technologies software.
AVG is what I use. I used the free version for a year, then bought the full version (nice, because it can scan certain areas instead of the entire computer).

As for antispyware, Windows Defender is a free download from the Microsoft website, and seems to work quite well.

I must say, though, the best medicine is prevention. Use safe internet practices, such as only downloading stuff from trustworthy sites, don't open email attachments from senders you don't know, and never, ever download porn.
You'll hear people say Symantec, it's good just a resource hog. I have always used Zone Alarm. It has outstanding anti virus and spyware protection. It has tons of other features. Check it out.

It's a virus that hides in emails i guess and is very hard to notice. None of my shields or antivirus discovered it. Not even the new nortan antivirus, actually it messed it all up and i hadda uninstall it. The only program that picked up on it was uniblue spyeraser. But it was only a free scan so it didn't fix it. You are correct. The crss.exe file can be a bad thing. But..... crss.exe is a part of Microsoft Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem. This file is used by user side subsystem to create or delete windows and threads. Unfortunately, this file name has also been used by some malwares such as Progent Trojan, AGOBOT/GAOBOT Worm and IRC.BOT Trojan, to name just a few.

Bottom line is, you don't want to delete the legitimate Microsoft file or you could have system problems. The good new is, crss.exe (the trojan/worm) has been around since at least 2004, so just about every security company including Norton/Symantec has a removal tool. I'd suggest you look through the Symantec link for each of the three crss.exe variants they know about. At the lower right corner of each description is removal instructions for that variant. If this doesn't get rid of it for you, I'd suggest contacting Symantec customer support for additional help.

What should I do?

I am considering deleting Norton Internet Security 2007 and downloading either AVG or Avast for antivirus protection. Also, to take care of spyware, I was planning on downloading Spybot Search and Destroy. Would this be a smart thing to do, or should I just stick with Norton?

The Internet Security programs supposedly gives me firewall, spyware, and virus protection so I would be deleting it and replacing it with antivirus (AVG/Avast) and anti-spyware (Spybot) but then I do not know if I would have a firewall. The reason I am doing this is because Norton only finds a cookie or two when I run a full system scan, while other free scanners find hundreds of problens. So basically I am wondering if I should do this or keep Norton, or maybe you have an even better suggestion...I just want to make this computer faster.

First of all, do you have a virus? If not, sticking with Norton is a good idea but if you want extra protection don't, delete Norton because its actually very good. You can just download the extra spy ware protection but i don't think you need any more. (i use norton and had no problems)

So while browsing the computer the other day I got a little box that indicated that there was a threat on the computer It said that it failed to remove. So scanned the computer with Symantec AntiVirus and it showed there was no threats. I looked under the history and it showed two things in the past history. It was called the same thing and dated the same day at the same time. The bottom one says it was not deleted but the top one said it was deleted. I deleted the backup that the antivirus saved and scanned my computer again and it showed no threats. I also scanned with Ad-Aware 2007 and it shows no threats. Do you think my computer is virus free?

Obviously you don't have any full-time antivirus program, or you wouldn't be asking this question. The only way to be sure is to install and keep current, one of the better free AV software, either Avast 4-Home or AVG 7.5. I personally have used Avast for nearly 5 years without a virus successfully getting past it, and it protects in real time. I recommend it.

As far as Ad-Aware 2007 is concerned, it is the best of its kind in anti-spyware, but not the only one. It usually takes two to completely protect the computer against spyware. And again, I've used Ad-Aware for years, but I also use SpywareBlaster.

I keep getting these porn popups from the same site and then a little while later a warning from the Security Center www.amaena.com , says my computer could be infected with the blackworm virus and my antivirus system can not the blackworm virus. But I scanned my computer with my own tools and came out to be no problems or unwanted files found computer is working normally. Don't worry I'm not gonna download it, I learned my lesson with downloading anything thats free. Go to Grisoft and get their Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs downloaded from this link: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5627/lng/us/... Put them in your Documents file then open each up and install them one at a time and run their scans one at a time and they should show you what you have. You need to remove the viruses and any worms that show up. It will take a little while, but patience is a virtue. Anti-virus will also run a scan daily, mine runs when I'm asleep. These are good programs.

Try booting your computer into Safe mode, then run AVG again. Sometimes it can't heal a file because it was actively loaded into the operating system and is in use...Safe mode should allow it to be deleted. If that doesn't work, at least it will tell you the path where the infected file is located, so you can manually quarantine it.

I personally use symantic antivirus and spybot search and destroy. symantic isnt the very best, but it works fine. spybot search and destroy is really good. it finds things every time i scan my computer. my only problem is it laggs while scanning so i can't go on the internet while scanning. other than that my computer is running fine and smoothly.
I would prefer you Bit Defender (anti virus) and Ad Aware ( anti spyware) but remember your computer is not totally protected but applying this things is the effort to prevent virus/spam/spyware but all that I stated above is the best in the world

I have a free version of ZoneAlarm running on my computer. I did have Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition downloaded but since I installed ZoneAlarm I get a warning box flashing up that AntiVir cannot be found or has been modified or destroyed. Up your system memory to 512 at least. Win XP is some what of a memory hog and if you don't have a dedicated video card with its own memory, then your system has to share what you already have. Ok, I seem to have aquirred some spyware %26 it changed my start up page to some antivirus add. I ran Norton Anti Virus and it removed the mal ware. It even infected my tool bar but I removed it. However, my homepage has changed and even when I type in the main home page I'd like it to be, it keeps going back to antivirus add page as my default. What should I do now? I am considering deleting Norton Internet Security 2007 and downloading either AVG or Avast for antivirus protection. Also, to take care of spyware, I was planning on downloading Spybot Search and Destroy. Would this be a smart thing to do, or should I just stick with Norton?

The Internet Security programs supposedly gives me firewall, spyware, and virus protection so I would be deleting it and replacing it with antivirus (AVG/Avast) and anti-spyware (Spybot) but then I do not know if I would have a firewall. The reason I am doing this is because Norton only finds a cookie or two when I run a full system scan, while other free scanners find hundreds of problens. So basically I am wondering if I should do this or keep Norton, or maybe you have an even better suggestion...I just want to make this computer faster.

Personally, I'd delete anything to do with Norton's from my system. It's ok in a corporate enviroment or if you are running a high end spec'd machine but for your average home user it is resourse hungry and will attempt to chew away at every bit of your memory/cpu as possible.

If you are going to remove Norton's from your system you need to do it properly, any remnant's left behind while uninstalling will conflict with any new anti virus (and in some case's) spyware programs you wish to install at a later date.

Dell Inspiron 530s losing hard drive space w/out doing anything!!?

here it goes. i just bought a Dell inspiron 530s computer a few weeks ago. it is a 500gb hd. right now it is at 455gb. we all know that OS is the one that takes that space. But here what really bothers me. when i got the computer. i had 435+ free of space. then everytime i go on my computer, it decreases my space. For Example, a few days ago it was at 435gb. then today it becomes 430,then 429 and right now, it is at 422gb free of space. i have not downloaded anything. the recent downloaded program that i downloaded was the avast antivirus. Everyday it seems to decrease my hard drive space. i checked a virus check, NOTHING!!!, i checked windows defender...nothing!!!, i don't know what's going on. Can anybody pplease help me. Kaspersky provides a free online scan at their site. When I try to scan online, the first thing it does is of course update the virus definitions. When I reach a hundred %, an error pops up which says

I need to download adware/antivirus removal software to repair adware issues on my pc because I can't access the internet from it at this time. I'm using a mac, but every time I try to do a download free anti spyware/virus removal it automatically detects my mac and downloads it for mac instead. My pc has limited or no connectivity bec of a winsock provider catalog error, so I assume it's a virus issue. Believe me, I've tried resetting with winsock catalog in command prompt, doing the sfc /scannow, and exporting winsock/winsock2 out of the registry and reinstalling it...ect. and nothing works. So, I'm going to assume my anti virus is out of date and disable it, so I can download something better. I repair computers, and of course I carry around several CD's with all those things you are trying to download. I assume most repairmen do. You might call one in your area and see if he or she will stop by and load you up with anti virus and antispyware software. If you are willing to do all the work yourself, the service charge should be nominal.

Ether that, or get a friend with a PC to download what you want and burn you a CD.

I dont think you can put these on CD's but buy a little usb flash drive for like 20 dollars and take the virus stuff on your mac, store it on your flash drive then plug into your PC and download it from there. Hope it helped.

This will kill them all, and automatically move the addresses to be blocked. I have over 9000 blocked right now, so it is the best. If you are getting pop-ups by just turning on your computer, then you probably have some kind of adware/spyware already on your system. Make sure you are using the latest version of Adaware, and the you have the latest updates to the definitions. In addition try Spybot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org. Again make sure the definitions are up to date. The previous two tools I mention won't stop popups, but they may eliminate the root cause of the popups.

I was browsing the internet yesterday and suddenlly I got a window that popped up from my Norton Antivirus software saying that Norton AntiVirus had detected a virus and that it has been immediately deleted. I ran a virus scan afterwards and there were no threats. I've never had this happen before so my question is, do I need to do anything, like go into the Norton and quarantine or do something to make sure my computer is threat-free? Or is it all taken care of? I don't know, it just seems too easy to have the software delete the virus immediately and then that's it!

What happens when you try to log into something? Without that detail, no one is going to know why you are having problems. Since the virus was on your machine for awhile, it could have spread a lot. Running a virus scan once is not guaranteed to get rid of it, if the scanner scanned folder A and the virus copied itself to folder A after it was scanned, the virus would still be there. Booting in safe mode and scanning will get better results, you may want to consider scanning more than once.

Ok, it's not that dramatic, but as far as anti-spyware software, the free versions are far superior to the paid versions. Spybot and AdAware are both great free programs. As far as antivirus, I haven't found a good free program, but ZoneAlarm is excellent and much cheaper than 150:

It goes for 30 bucks. With a reinstall of Windows it takes a little time but honestly it's really not that hard. If you have problems there are TONS of geeks on the internet in forums such as http://www.anandtech.com and http://www.tomshardware.com/index.html that will help you for free. Just avoid Best Buy, seriously. Being a little computer literate isn't as hard as they want you to think. You can copy your anti-virus program to a disc, but first have your SIL boot her computer into "Safe Mode" by tapping the F8 key at startup. Once in Safe Mode, load in your anti-virus program, and then run it. That should take care of the virus, as long as the program's virus definitions are up to date.

Computer running slow, and other problems.?

For about two months now my computer has been running slow and it seems to have started when I got a new modem from the cable company that has both the cable internet as well as cable phone. I have ran different registry fix programs, each of them has found around 430 problems, and i finally found one that would fix them for free. I have done this, and the problem really has not changed. I thought maybe it was a virus so I ran my antivirus - it finds nothing wrong. I have ran defrag, as well as disk cleanup...both work fine but do not really help anything it seems. Also, my Internet explorer when open starts jumping from full screen to reg. size and really cant be stopped. So I downloaded firefox thinking it was an internet explorer error. It's not. My computer has plenty of free space, and is great as far as processor etc goes. Any suggestions?????

Hibernation takes more time in my Windows-XP Professional Workstation?

Very often I Hibernate my workstation , instead of shutting-down.

Usually my PC will hibernate within 1 minute ( or maximum of 80

seconds ) and go to power-off state ( even if 15 IE Windows are open , some downloads are in progress, Antivirus scan is in progress ...) .

But for the last two days , the hibernation takes almost 7 to 8

minutes.

No major applications installed or hardware changes done.

I close all applications and even stopped unnecessary Services - but still it takes 8 minutes to complete hibernate

There was enough free disk space in C Drive ( 2 GB free ); it requires 1 GB for the hiberfil.sys file.

Whereas , starting the PC ( from hibernate-state) , takes normal time , less than a minute.

Any clues , suggestions , solutions , recommendations will be highly appreciated.

Hibernation takes more time in my Windows-XP Professional Workstation?ariel

Off the top of my head;

either you have increased the RAM in your computer, while not a major hardware change this will directly affect your hibernate process since hibernate is nothing more than writing out the CPU state and RAM contents to drive (well that is simplified a lot but you get the drift) so more RAM = more writing, OR your drive has become very fragmented (and really dude, 2 Gb is not a lot in this day and age), OR your hard drive is going to meet its maker soon.

Partiton magic sounds like the program you are looking for but i don't know if it can do what you want it to do. You already have data on the second partiton so there might be the added risk that you could loose the data on the second partiton.

if are using windows XP right click my documents and select properties and then MOVE. Select a location on the D drive.

Virus...what to do?

Well i currently don't have any antivirus program, and i think i got a virus. I am quite computer literate, but i need a little advice here. When i did a free online scan provided by Trend Micro HouseCall 6.5, my computer went to the blue screen of death when it started scanning files and computer. I am quite sure this is because I have a virus.

My question is, what can i do besides completely restore my computer. I have a lot of settings that i don't want to lose, as well as a few programs with some huge patches that i dont' want to re download.

Urgent question about how Personal Norton Firewall looks?

My comuter had a red icon warning me to download antivirus; it had a list so I chosed Symantec and found it said 90 days free trial.

It is a small circle in black with small quares and yellow all around; it does not look like the original logo on Symantec which is yellow with black. Is that how it should look like.

I went to google and wrote Norton and there they offer trialware the same one; Symantec but strangely it it only for 15 days trial so....

Now the red icon dissapeared....should I trust it or should I remove the program.

Nothing to worry about that since you have downloaded the symantec product through a link which is given by microsoft's site. Since microsoft is acting like a sponsor of symantec's product in this case, so there is no point in trialware days. Dont worry whether its 90 day trial or a 15 day trial.

For checking whether the symantec product is working fine on your system, double click on norton personal firewall icon on the system, norton personal firewall window will be opened, and there see whether its active or not. If its active then nothing to worry about it. If its not active then you need to check the settings.

Please note that the symantec product will stop working after elapsing of the trialware period, then the personal firewall icon will show a cross or some other behaviour.

20%? I doubt so. Norton is notorious for their resource hogging but their detection rate and scanner is pretty decent.

There is no single anti-virus program that will detect all viruses. Thousands are created by the day, and all researchers struggle to locate, identify and create new signatures to update the product.

Regarding 'free Rundll32 error fixes', these are usually flashing banners that entice you to click them. If you do click them, you will find out that they are programs that do not work as advertised. They may even install more virus/spyware onto your computer, so be very careful.
AS Chiaz has already posted Norton IS a resourse hog but is pretty damn good at detecting viruses and other malware.

Bear share is full of nasty little programs that ruin you computer. Use limewire instead they do give you any trojans or viruses when you download. Also the format is more convenient than bear share's.

However, both give you access to the same network. So if you download files using bear share or lime wire it doesn't matter.

Your computer will be safe as long as you stay away from videos. They often are just adware is disguise. Music files will be safe as long as you get MP3 or WMA format. Really though as long as you have an anti-virus program you don't have anything to worry about. Just scan your computer if you open something that seems suspicious.

Make sure you have removed all of Nortons' Components, i.e.- Norton Antivirus, Symantec Live Update, I think there might be one more I'm not sure. If it asks if you want to remove the definitions check yes also. I have not used Norton for some time now because it bogs my system down quite a bit. I was able to uninstall it completely from the add/remove programs window. Then try to reinstall McAfee again.

I use Ad-aware Se Personal, Spy-Bot Search and Destroy, Ewido Antispy and Kaspersky Antivirus and Firewall. I have had absolutely no trouble with spyware or viruses.

I've not had any problems with Norton antivirus and firewall, but lately I鈥檝e been seeing people talking about how it slows your system way down. So I'm wondering what I should replace them with that are just as good. I know about AVG, but is it popular simply because it's free? What firewall should I pair it up with? Is Zone Alarm any good or is its popularity only stemmed from the fact that it's free too. What are some others you've used and recommend?

Hi, I had nortons 2006. It was too big for my puter but I do have an old system. Pentium 3. And it bogged me down bad. So I just reinstalled Nortons 2003. It works great. I think Nortons is overdoing it a bit with all the added features. But zone alarm works quite well and is free. But if you don't have a problem with Nortons slowing you down. I'd keep it.
Norton can slow down your system. But that is the price you pay for protection. I usually find as long as your not downloading a lot of stuff You won't get any viruses. I have NO protection on my system and have never had a problem.

My PC is slow at locating files on the hard disc, so when I open a picture to view it, or when I right click some MP3 files, it takes about 6 seconds to locate it and give me detailed info about it.

My hard disc has a 232GB capacity of which 45GB are free.

I think it's probably because of the limited free space, but I have heard that windows does that over time, because of the many registries created through months of use.

I will not use a registry cleaner because I don't trust them.

My computer is infected with spyware, and it will not allow me to open my antispyware program. I downloaded a free antispyware program called superantispyware and it too will not open. so i downloaded an antivirus AVG. it wouldnt open. then i got Ad-Aware. it opens, but when i run a scan my pc will just turn off randomly in the middle of the scan.

before doing the adaware scan i uninstalled the avg. i also tried system restore, but it says i have no restore points. i have used system restore a few times before so im not sure if maybe the spyware messed that up too.

Norton Firewall, Norton Antivirus, Windows defender, CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy.

I have heard that Norton is slowing my computer down (I dont have the most up to date PC - 1.5ghz processor, 256mb ram) Someone suggested getting rid of the anti virus and installing AVG free version.

Slow computer?

I don't know why my computer is running slow. I've done antivirus scans, defrags, disk cleanups, and deleted programs I don't use but still no improvement. I can barely use any programs, can't view videos very well because it lags so bad, I can't listen to music because it keeps cutting and skipping no matter what program I use, internet is slow as well, there are NO viruses, even booting up takes a while. I haven't had these problems before. I need help.

Click start , then run

Type msconfig

A window opens with many tabs: general, system.ini..

Click the last tab which is startup. You will see that many programs are clicked. Unclick all of them (diable all), most of them are unnecessary and run in the background taking up space, if the system needs them during startup it will take care of it, so dont have to worry if you unclicked a necessary program.
