Spybot is ok.

Zonealarm is an excellent firewall which comes with what you need.

The thing to keep in mind is that when you get free stuff, there is not much ambition for people to keep things updated, unless they are making money thru commercials on their sites.

Windows Defender, available on microsoft site. But it works only with IE7.
Try " Spybot Search %26 Destroy 1.4 ". It scans and eliminates spyware for FREE. I have had it for 3 years, and with regular up-dates %26 scans, I hardly ever get any spyware. If some item does manage to squeeze in, it's always easily dealt with.
The one thing to remember about spyware removers is that they all do something different. Unfortunately, spyware and malware changes so quickly that there's really not a single application that can do it all for you. You may have to try more than one.

There's one thing that you should know, however. There are plenty of good (and free) spyware removers available. Get one of those before you throw down your hard earned money to buy one. Paying for a spyware remover should be a last resort with so many good free removers on the market. A lot of times, a free package will do the job with you having to come out of pocket.
