This is one of those things when more is always better. My personal favorite is Lavasoft's Adaware. I have run it with norton for years, and have had no problems. My hard drive is going on six years old, and running strong. You can get the personal addition of Adaware for free, but you'll have to pay for the professional addition. Don't worry, however, the personal edition is plenty of punch for your purposes. Click on the link below, and press the "download now" button. After it has downloaded (should be on your desktop) just double-click and away you go!
Trend Micor is a very good Virus and adware remover. Rated #1 last year in reviews. It's never a bad thing to have more than one Adware scanner but never a good thing to have 2 virus scanners. Check out link below.
