Mcphee to expire and need free security that is safe?

my mcphee is about to expire and i was really happy with it but i cant afford to renew it, does anyone have any suggestions as to where i could get an equal quality security? I'm realy scared of viruses and spyware, i have a teen and a curious husband who use the internet frequently and i need security.
